How to Sell an Item Fast on Classifieds: 8 Rules
Some listings sell an item in a day; others sit for months. The difference is almost never luck — it is photos, the title, the price and how fast you reply. Here are 8 rules that work.
1. Photos decide everything
Buyers scroll with their eyes, not their reason. Shoot in daylight, clear the frame of clutter, take 4–6 angles: overall view, details, close-ups of defects. An honest photo of a flaw builds trust and filters out wasted visits.
2. Write the title like a search query
Write the way a buyer searches: “IKEA Friheten sofa bed, grey” instead of “Selling sofa urgent!!!”. Brand, model, one key attribute — that is enough.
3. Price by the market, not by memory
What you paid is irrelevant — check what similar items sell for now and go slightly below the middle. A price inflated “to leave room for haggling” simply kills views during the first, most important days.
4. The description answers questions in advance
- Dimensions, age, condition, reason for selling.
- What is included (charger, box, documents).
- Logistics: pickup or delivery, neighbourhood, when viewings are convenient.
5. Reply within the first hour
A motivated buyer messages three to five sellers at once and buys from whoever answers first. Turn on notifications and keep short replies ready.
6. Refresh and mark down
No responses in a week is a price signal. A 10–15% markdown and a refreshed listing put the item back at the top of the feed.
7. Sell to everyone, not just “your” community
When you are new to a country, the language barrier cuts your audience dramatically. On Ovdix a listing is automatically translated into 8 languages, and the chat translates messages both ways — local buyers see your listing in their own language.
8. Safety by default
- Payment at handover; no prepayments or “reservation” transfers.
- Do not follow “delivery service” links sent to your messengers.
- Show expensive items during the day, in a public place or not alone.
