Moving Abroad: How to Sell Everything in 3–4 Weeks

Shipping furniture and appliances across a border almost always costs more than selling here and re-buying there. Here is a working sell-off plan that avoids last-week panic.

3–4 weeks out: sort and photograph

Split your belongings into three lists: sell, give away, discard. Photograph everything on the first list right away — daylight, neutral background, 3–5 shots per item. List large and expensive items (furniture, appliances) first: they take the longest to sell.

    How to price

    • Check similar listings in your country — for example among classifieds in Serbia or in Montenegro — and price in the lower third of the range: your goal is speed.
    • Good used furniture typically sells for 30–50% of the new price, appliances for 40–60% depending on age.
    • Leave room for haggling: buyers almost always ask for a discount, so add 10–15% upfront.

2 weeks out: the price-cut wave

Whatever has not sold in the first week, mark down by 15–25% and refresh the listings. Add bundles: “table + 4 chairs”, “entire kitchen at once” — selling in bulk is easier for you, and buyers love a volume discount.

    The last week: urgency sale

State your departure date honestly — “pickup by Saturday” is a great motivator. Give the leftovers away for free with pickup: it is faster than arranging disposal, and the items get a second life.

    Deal safety

    • Payment in cash or by transfer at handover — never advance payments “to reserve”.
    • Schedule viewings of expensive items during the day and, if possible, not alone.
    • Keep the conversation in the platform chat — it preserves the history of what was agreed.

The golden rule: start earlier than feels necessary. A one-week head start at the beginning quietly saves nerves and hundreds of euros at the end.
